Heating and Cooling System Maintenance Tips for Pet Owners

Pets can fill a home with love, but they can also fill your heating and cooling system with fur, dander, and hair.

Heating and cooling system maintenance is essential for pet owners. With the proper steps, you’ll be able to maintain your indoor air quality and keep all members of your family happy — four-legged or not.

Here’s what you’ll want to do:

  1. Keep Pets Groomed

Prevention can be key. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, frequent pet bathing can help eliminate dander, dust, and pollen. Plus, when your furry friends have less hair, there’s less that can get clogged in your vents or air filters.

  1. Change Furnace Filters Regularly

Typically, homeowners should change their furnace filters and air filters about every three months. But if you’re a pet owner it should be even more frequent — potentially every three-to-four weeks.

This will depend on the size of your system, the type of filters you use (some better-quality ones won’t need to be changed as often), and the number/type of pets you have.

  1. Upgrade Your Filters

As mentioned above, some better-quality furnace and air filters can withstand more fur. Especially if you have allergies, you’ll probably want to consider upgrading to a HEPA filter. These trap microscopic dust and dander and can reduce allergens by 99.7 per cent. They’re a little more expensive, but the cost can be well worth it as it increases your indoor air quality and can extend the life of your heating and cooling system.

  1. Keep Condensers Safe

Watch for pet urine around your air conditioning condenser as it can corrode the fins. Plus, anything with moving parts can be dangerous for your pets. And if there are any wires that are exposed, those could be hazardous if your pet claws or bites at them.

Train them to stay away from your units. If that’s not possible, consider building a fence or planting dense shrubbery around it. Make sure anything surrounding the unit is kept at least three feet away.

  1. Keep Regular Heating and Cooling System Maintenance

It’s even more imperative for pet owners that they have a professional come in to do regular maintenance on their heating and cooling system. A yearly maintenance plan can save you money on energy bills, extend the life of your unit, and increase your indoor air quality. The Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) recommends your gas appliances be checked at least once per year by a professional technician.

  1. Consider Electronic Air Cleaning Units

Pet owners may want to consider adding on an electronic air cleaning unit that can remove dander and other allergens from indoors. These air purifiers can reduce pet odours and smells, plus help a great deal with allergies.
