Beat the Summer Heat: Ways to Lower Your Air Conditioning Costs and Stay Cool

Topics: Air Conditioner, Air Conditioning Costs, Summer

When the summer heats up, your air conditioning costs can also creep up. But they don’t have to.

You can stay cool without breaking the bank account with a few simple tricks. Read on for ways to save money on your air conditioning costs.

  1. Use a Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan or circulating fan can make a room feel colder by the wind-chill effect. It can also work with a central air conditioner as it disperses cooled air.

  1. Use a Smart Thermostat in the Right Placement

You’ve likely heard of the benefits of smart thermostats and lowering air conditioning costs is one of them. Set your AC when you’re home and program the temperature to be as high as you’re comfortable with when you’re out or sleeping. This could decrease your bill by 10%. Thermostat placement also matters. Make sure your thermostat isn’t directly in the sun or beside a heat-generating appliance.

  1. Save Heat-Building Activities for After Dark

Using the oven, running the dishwasher, and using the clothes dryer should all be left for the evening hours when temperatures outside are cooler. During the heat of the day, wash dishes by hand, and cook on the grill or in the microwave. Hang clothes outside to dry on a clothesline.

  1. Close Curtains, Blinds, and Shades

During the day, make sure all your windows are covered and use lighter-coloured treatments. The lighter the hue, the more they’ll deflect the sun.

  1. Check Insulation and Attic Ventilation

Don’t cool the whole neighbourhood. Having a professional come in and look for areas where you’re leaking air could save you big time (the type of windows you have can also make a difference). Similarly, 30% of heat is absorbed through the roof of your house, so make sure your attic is properly ventilated. A ridge vent or an attic fan can significantly reduce your cooling costs.

  1. Choose Lighter Paint Colours for Your Home’s Exterior

If you’re painting or residing your home, go for a lighter colour. As we mentioned earlier, darker hues absorb sunlight.

  1. Close Rooms You Aren’t Using

If you’re not using a space, there’s no sense cooling it. Close rooms you’re not using and close the vents to those rooms.

  1. Turn Off Lights and Equipment

Turn off lights when you’re not using them and turn off electronic equipment when you’re not using it.

  1. Get Proper Maintenance

Dirty AC filters can significantly affect airflow and make your unit work harder. Regular maintenance and filter replacement will help keep it running in tip-top shape.

  1. Make Sure Your Unit is Energy-Efficient

If you’re running an older air conditioning unit, your costs may be higher depending on the energy efficiency. Switching to a newer model may be more expensive in the short term but could save money in the long run.
