What is a Package Unit?

At HomeBridge Canada, we’re constantly doing our best to help you understand your HVAC system options. A few weeks ago, we answered the question “What is an HVAC split system?”.

Now we’re going to the other side of the coin — what is a package unit?

If you recall, a split system is when there’s an outside condenser and an indoor unit, too — typically with a furnace and coil, or an air handler. So, when we’re looking at package units, it makes sense that it’s the opposite — an all-in-one unit that sits together.

Typically, a package unit contains of the parts in one outdoor unit that sits on either the roof or the side of the building. They can be a good fit for homes that don’t have a basement or crawlspace. But they can work in any home that has the right ductwork.

Package units come in two sizes — small or large — and the size you pick can depend on the installation requirements for your home. As you may suspect, smaller units tend to be easier to install.

There are several different types of HVAC units that are most common:

  • Package Air Conditioners. This can be a good choice if you want all-electric heating and air conditioning capabilities.
  • Package Gas/Electric Systems. This unit combines an air conditioner, coil, and gas furnace all in one. This is a great option if you don’t have a lot of space inside your home for an indoor component.
  • Package Heat Pumps. These are best for areas where temperatures rarely drop below freezing.
  • Dual-Fuel System. This works by turning on your gas furnace when temperatures get too cold. It can use less gas year-round to heat, potentially reducing your utility bill.

In general, it’s easier to achieve high efficiency with a split system, but a package unit can be a great option if you live in a smaller space or have the right ductwork already installed.

If you think a package unit may be right for you or want to compare split system vs. package unit pricing, an HVAC technician can help.
